UNU & GIST Joint Programme on Science and Technology for Sustainability
2007 Workshop Announcement

The 5th UNU & GIST Joint Programme Workshop on Sound Management of Hazardous Chemicals and Sustainable Energy
(Oct. 30 ~ Nov. 1 2007, GIST, Gwangju, Korea)
First Announcement on Call for Abstracts

Objectives and Focus of 2007 Workshop

Environmental scientists and engineers can play a pivotal role in planning and implementing national and intergovernmental policies on sustainable development by providing scientific baseline information or pertinent technological solutions to site-specific environmental and energy problems. The UNU & GIST Joint Programme has been conducting extensive research and training programmes on environmental sustainability issues, especially in developing countries. The 2007 Workshop aims at bringing together both leading experts and researchers from both developing and developed countries to discuss emerging environmental and energy issues with a focus on new research trends in sound management of hazardous chemicals and sustainable energy.

Among various research fields studying the environmental fate and ecosystem impacts of hazardous chemicals, the Workshop will focus on recent developments in biotechnological and geochemical applications. In addition, this 2007 workshop will cover the issues ranging from sustainable energy technologies to sustainable energy management. International experts will be invited to provide an overview of major recent developments in these research fields and application potentials for developing countries. A full list of plenary and invited speakers will be available soon. Approximately 20 researchers from developing countries will also be invited to present their home country's situation and research activities regarding sound management of hazardous chemicals and sustainable energy.

This workshop will be of special interest to researchers and government officers who are actively involved in research and policy implementation to monitor and abate the environmental risk of various hazardous chemicals and pollutants (including heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, endocrine disrupting chemicals, radioactive wastes, air pollutants, acidic deposition) as well as those who actively work on issues related to emerging role of sustainable energy such as renewable energy, advanced cleaner fossil fuel technology, carbon capture and storage as well as clean development initiatives.
