When : December 18~20, 2012
Where : B159, Engineering Building B, Ewha Womans University, Seoul, Korea
I. General Information
The Center for Climate/Environment Change Prediction Research (CCCPR) will host
the 4th annual International Winter School and Workshop (IWSW) at Ewha Womans University
in Seoul, Korea. The purpose of the 2012 IWSW is to engage scholars and students in formal lectures,
lab practices and presentations of researches. Participants are expected to acquire and/or enhance theoretical and
practical understanding and knowledge of ecosystem and climate change both at and beyond the 2012 IWSW.
Primary three lecturers are Richard Primack (Boston University), Ranga Myneni (Boston University), and
Fei Chen (the National Center for Atmospheric Research).
II. Theme
The 2012 IWSW theme, 밇cosystem and Climate Change: Observations, Modeling, and Their Analyses,?
addresses ecosystem and climate change that are in a mutually interactive relationship. As dynamic and
complex systems interacting with the environment surrounding them, terrestrial ecosystems are projected
to be substantially modified by global and regional climate change, on the one hand. On the other hand,
the responses of the ecosystems and their feedbacks to land-surface processes and climate amplify or dampen
the original climate change. In this manner, understanding the impact of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems and
surface is of particular importance in improving climate prediction, the capability for climate change impact assessment,
and appropriate ecosystem management. Consequently, the 2012 IWSW will offer unique opportunities for attendees
to critically examine not only terrestrial ecosystem observations associated with climate change, but also development of
models to describe, interpret, and forecast future conditions.
III. Primary Invited Lecturers
Internationally-recognized three lecturers with both theoretical and practical expertise in in the topic are invited
to give formal lectures.
Dr. Richard B. Primack (Boston University, USA)
Dr. Ranga B. Myneni (Boston University, USA)
Dr. Fei Chen (NCAR, USA)
The three lecturers will provide you with (i) basic, but fundamental, theories and modeling relevant to terrestrial
ecosystem and its interactions with climate and surface hydrology, (ii) knowledge on the advanced techniques
of ground and satellite observations for terrestrial ecosystems and land surface processes, and (iii) practical
methods of applications of the observations to ecosystem modeling, and their limitations.
IV. Participation Guidelines and Proposal Deadlines
All participants must register by November 3, 2012 on the CCCRP homepage (http://www.cccpr.org).
The linking webpage for the registration will be available from October 10, 2012.
Registration Fee (including lunch and dinner for 3 days)
- Student: 200 USD (240,000 KRW)
- Regular: 300 USD (360,000 KRW)
cf. Special offer for overseas students
In order to encourage participations from overseas students, CCCPR is planning to offer partial financial aid.
The applicants are required to submit an abstract for a talk (a 15-minute oral presentation) during the Thursday workshop section.
The submitted abstracts will be evaluated for the final decision, and then the personal contact will go to the grantees with more details.
